Cattle Service

Welcome to the Livestock Information Service (LIS)

The Livestock Information Service (LIS) provides a digital platform for livestock keepers and supply chain partners, such as markets and abattoirs, to report and manage livestock movements seamlessly.

Currently supporting sheep, goat, and deer movements in England, LIS is evolving to become a powerful new multispecies system, driving greater Electronic Identification (EID) of livestock to create the capability for real-time reporting of movements through one unified platform.

The first traceability service to be launched will be for cattle, replacing the existing and outdated Cattle Traceability Service (CTS). This will be launched in phases, starting with a private beta for a small number of selected cattle keepers and in time, extending the criteria to invite selected 3rd Party Software providers. This phased approach will allow any issues to be resolved quickly and ensure a smoother transition for all users. The aim is to roll out the new LIS cattle service to all cattle keepers by summer 2026.

During this transition, existing livestock traceability systems will remain operational until the new LIS is fully deployed across England and the devolved administrations. The Standard Interface Specification (SIS) will be phased out as part of this update.

Key Features of the Upcoming Cattle Service:

  • Effortless cattle movement reporting from any device - mobile, tablet, or desktop.
  • The ability to update animal details (subject to rules) and log lost, stolen, found, imported, or exported animals.
  • Secure, easily accessible records with seamless updates.
  • Faster, more accurate online movement data for enhanced disease control.
  • Extended visibility of animals on your holding, increasing from 6 months to 18 months.

The new cattle traceability service will provide vital data to both government and industry, ensuring faster responses to animal diseases. In addition to fulfilling statutory requirements, the service aims to drive greater operational efficiency, deliver deeper insights, and support innovation and research within the livestock sector.
